Science Fiction Releases for January 2011

I have two strong recommendations for January. My absolute pick is Home Fires by Gene Wolfe and Blue by Lou Aronica. Gene Wolfe is a veteran award-winning SFF author with dozens of novels to his credit and Lou Aronica has been in SF publishing and writing for many years. He is launching his new SF imprint The Fiction Studio with his novel Blue.

Also of note this month is the Carol Emshwiller collection, a new James P. Hogan and the ninth Vampire Earth novel.

Now he brings you a glimpse into an equally terrifying future what happens when civilization invades and dictates every aspect of your life? The Collected Stories of Carol Emshwiller
01/1/11
Crossing the boundaries between fabulist literature, science fiction, and magical realism, the stories in this collection offer a valuable glimpse into the evolution of Carol Emshwiller’s ideas and style during her more than 50-year career. Influenced by J. G. Ballard, Steven Millhauser, Philip K. Dick, and Lydia Davis, Emshwiller has a range of works that is impressive and demonstrates her refusal to be labeled or to stick to one genre. This exhilarating new collection marks the first time many of the early stories have been published in book form and is evidence of the genius of Emshwiller, one of America’s most versatile and imaginative authors.

Judgment on Tartarus

Wolfe, Gene
Home Fires
01/18/11
Gene Wolfe takes us to a future North America at once familiar and utterly strange. A young man and woman, Skip and Chelle, fall in love in college and marry, but she is enlisted in the military, there is a war on, and she must serve her tour of duty before they can settle down. But the military is fighting a war with aliens in distant solar systems, and her months in the service will be years in relative time on Earth. Chelle returns to recuperate from severe injuries, after months of service, still a young woman but not necessarily the same person—while Skip is in his forties and a wealthy businessman, but eager for her return. Still in love (somewhat to his surprise and delight), they go on a Caribbean cruise to resume their marriage. Their vacation rapidly becomes a complex series of challenges, not the least of which are spies, aliens, and battles with pirates who capture the ship for ransom. There is no writer in SF like Gene Wolfe and no SF novel like Home Fires.
Zahn, Timothy
Cobra Guardian
Cobra War #2
01/4/11
When the colony worlds Adirondack and Silvern fell to the Troft forces almost without a struggle. Outnumbered and on the defensive, Earth made a desperate decision. It would attack the aliens not from space, but on the ground—with forces the Trofts did not even suspect. Thus were created the Cobras, a guerilla force whose weapons were surgically implanted, invisible to the unsuspecting eye, yet undeniably deadly. And the Moreau family were the most famous of the Cobra warriors. Long after victory over the Troft was achieved, the Cobras made common cause against their former adversaries against a new enemy. Their reward was three planets that would be a home for the Cobras, who deadly powers made them too dangerous to feel at home on Earth. Now, years had passed and not everyone on the Cobra worlds thought that the Cobras were worth the cost of maintaining their existing built-in weaponry, let alone supporting research to improve the Cobra weapons, and possibly even put an end to the negative effects of that built-in weaponry, which caused Cobras to die much too young. Many who had never known interplanetary war were convinced that the Cobras were not needed at all. That was a grave miscalculation, because a Troft faction has decided to invade the Cobra planets in force, using a new strategy that even the formidable Cobra warriors may not be able to defeat . . .

Roux, Madeleine
Allison Hewitt Is Trapped: A Zombie Novel
01/18/11
Publishers Weekly - Plot gaps diminish this otherwise exciting horror adventure debut. When the zombie apocalypse breaks out, bookstore clerk Allison escapes the titular trap and finds a group of survivors at a community center, including handsome astronomy professor Collin. Complications--aside from the usual attacks by ravenous undead--include religious zealots, paramilitary survivalists, and Collin's estranged and intimidating wife. As Allison blogs about her experience on SNet, an emergency military network, commenters provide some sense of the disaster's scope, but there's little explanation for how she created the blog and why no other sites are mentioned. Likewise, a pivotal early attack by a zombified squirrel is ignored later as the heroes traipse through the woods ignoring all nonhumanoid threats. These flaws aren't enough to hide Roux's obvious talent for witty characters and gory action sequences, but they will frustrate attentive readers.

Vera and her brother Will live in the shadow of the Great Panic, in a country that has collapsed from environmental catastrophe. Water is hoarded by governments, rivers are dammed, and clouds are sucked from the sky. But then Vera befriends Kai, who seems to have limitless access to fresh water. When Kai suddenly disappears, Vera and Will set off on a dangerous journey in search of him-pursued by pirates, a paramilitary group, and greedy corporations. Timely and eerily familiar, acclaimed author Cameron Stracher makes a stunning YA debut that's impossible to forget. "Let us pray that the world which Cameron Stracher has invented in The Water Wars is testament solely to his pure, wild, and brilliant imagination, and not his ability to see the future. I was parched just reading it."-Laurie David, academy award winning producer of An Inconvenient Truth, and author of The Down to Earth Guide to Global Warming

She's a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people's fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives. And Sabine isn't above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

Cast out of the city of Agora where they were left at the end of The Midnight Charter, Mark and Lily must now survive in a dense forest. The strange villages, terrifying nightmares, and powerful witches they find there are even more frightening than Agora with all its slums and secrets. In an adventure that expands with every turn of the page, David Whitley delivers a novel as thrilling and horrifying as his characters' darkest dreams.

Urban Fantasy & Paranormal Romance Releases for January 2011

EDITORS NOTE: I must have been off-planet when they announced that River Marked wouldn't be out until March.  Hope I didn't get anyone too excited by my slip.

If books are on your radar for post-Christmas purchases, then January has a lot to offer in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance with over 50 titles to choose form. There are some big hitters this month with a new Mercy Thompson release by Patricia Briggs and Archangel's Consort by Nalini Singh. The cover for River Marked is my favourite from among all the titles with Cherie Priest's Bloodshot a close second.

Simon R. Green gets the nod for best title for the 11th Nightside novel A Hard Day's Knight. After a long absence fantasy writer Barbara Hambly is back with her third vampire tale and Jon Courtney Grimwood brings us dark fantasy vampire title as well. Crappiest book blurb for the month goes to Faith Hunter's Mercy Blade with an almost non-existent write-up. Love the series and it deserves better coverage then it has received.

Other titles I am looking forward to include Mercy Blade, Taken by the Others, The Kensei, Death's Sweet Embrace, Frostfire, Blood Challenge and of course Secrets of the Demon.

My personal pick for the month is Among Others by Jo Walton.

Now she wants to rule Hollywood as a film director, with Christian her next big star. Grace is her secret weapon in recruiting Christian to take the role. Hoping to direct herself, Grace has been playing unwitting student to Nim Wei’s seemingly kind mentor. Pagliassotti, Dru
An Agreement with Hell
01/03/11
Publishers Weekly - Construction workers at California Hills University uncover a graveyard of human bones. After the police remove a sacred seal from the grave site, giant serpents from the void of heaven and hell burst through the earth, terrorizing the campus. Christian "magickian" Jack Langthorn and his partner, professor and retired priest Andy Markham, are joined by the mysterious Walker Between the Worlds and the demon Amon as they try to figure out where the serpents come from and how to stop them from bringing about the apocalypse. Meanwhile, irritatingly obtuse students rally together to kill the monsters. While Pagliassotti clearly knows a lot about Christian mysticism, the mythology of the book remains unclear. Add an excess of unnecessary and sometimes unlikable characters, and what would have otherwise been an engaging story becomes too convoluted to enjoy.

Thompson Vicki Lewis
A Werewolf in Manhattan
01/04/11
Publishers Weekly - This middling series starter introduces a paranormal romance novelist whose fiction turns out to be true. Aidan Wallace, heir to a pack of wealthy New York werewolves, worries that someone is leaking info to writer Emma Gavin, so he follows her on tour. Sparks quickly fly, and when Emma is stalked by a werewolf fan, Aidan shifts from pack spy to devoted protector and is predictably torn between his passion for Emma and his family obligations, including a long-arranged marriage. The central romance is stronger than the surrounding interpack politics and family drama, despite a ludicrous werewolf-specific "genetic condition" that provides unnecessary excuses for bedroom romps. Though weakened by an overly quick and easy resolution, Thompson (Over Hexed) provides a sufficiently clever setup and enough heated sex scenes to satisfy any werewolf romance fan.

Among Others
01/18/11
Publishers Weekly - World Fantasy Award winner Walton (Tooth and Claw) turns the magical boarding school story inside out in this compelling coming-of-age tale. Welsh teen Morwenna was badly hurt, and her twin sister killed, when the two foiled their abusive mother's spell work. Seeking refuge with a father she barely knows in England, Mori is shunted off to a grim boarding school. Mori works a spell to find kindred souls and soon meets a welcoming group of science fiction readers, but she can feel her mother looking for her, and this time Mori won't be able to escape. Walton beautifully captures the outsider's yearning in Mori's earthy and thoughtful journal entries: "It doesn't matter. I have books, new books, and I can bear anything as long as there are books." Never deigning to transcend the genre to which it is clearly a love letter, this outstanding (and entirely teen-appropriate) tale draws its strength from a solid foundation of sense-of-wonder and what-if.
