Urban Fantasy & Paranormal Releases for November 2010

Only two anthologies this month, but both look excellent.I have a copy of The Best Paranormal Crime Stories Ever Told and hope to review it shortly. There are also a couple of previously titles this month that will not appear in print because of the Dorchester kerfuffle. I've marked them as DORCHESTER VICTIM.

On my review and buy list are Counterfeit Magic (Kelley Armstrong), Spun by Sorcery (Babara Bretton), Silver Zombie (Carole Nelson Douglas who will be guesting in early December), The Greyfriar (the Griffins), Afterlight (Elle Jasper), Game Over (Taylor Keating who is guesting this week), In the Dark of Dreams (Marjorie Lie - I never miss a Dirk & Steele), Apocalypse of the Dead (Joe McKinney - because they're zombies), and Bitten in Two (Jennifer Rardin). I'll probably add a couple more before the end of the month from some of the longstanding series that I don't want to miss.

My favourite cover of the month is The Greyfriar, closely followed by Afterlight. I like the moods and colors in both. Whats your pick? The most interesting tile this month for me is Trolls in the Hamptons by Celia Jerome. Hopefully is a hoot.

Separate young adult, fantasy  and science fiction lists will be posted through out the week, so please check back. As always if there are errors or omissions, please let me know and I will update accordingly.

The Greyfriar
Vampire Empire #1
11/02/10
In the year 1870, a horrible plague of vampires swept over the northern regions of the world. Millions of humans were killed outright. Millions more died of disease and famine due to the havoc that followed. Within two years, once-great cities were shrouded by the gray empire of the vampire clans. Human refugees fled south to the tropics because vampires could not tolerate the constant heat there. They brought technology and a feverish drive to reestablish their shattered societies of steam and iron amid the mosques of Alexandria, the torrid quietude of Panama, or the green temples of Malaya. It is now 2020 and a bloody reckoning is coming. Princess Adele is heir to the Empire of Equatoria, a remnant of the old tropical British Empire. She is quick with her wit as well as with a sword or gun. She is eager for an adventure before she settles into a life of duty and political marriage to a man she does not know. But her quest turns black when she becomes the target of a merciless vampire clan. Her only protector is the Greyfriar, a mysterious hero who fights the vampires from deep within their territory. Their dangerous relationship plays out against an approaching war to the death between humankind and the vampire clans. The Greyfriar (Vampire Empire, Book 1) is the first book in a trilogy of high adventure and alternate history. Combining rousing pulp action with steampunk style, the Vampire Empire series brings epic political themes to life within a story of heartbreaking romance, sacrifice, and heroism.

But Ed Moore and the others refuse to enter a suicide pact. They'd rather stand and fight in the final battle against the zombies. An apocalypse of the dead.

Magic at the Gate
Allie Beckstrom #5
11/02/10
Publishers Weekly - The action-packed fifth Allie Beckstrom novel (after 2009's Magic in the Shadows) amps up the magical mayhem. Just as Allie joins the Authority, a secret group of magical enforcers, internal warfare threatens the organization. Also in danger is Zayvion Jones, Allie's Soul Complement. To save him, she must travel through the gates of Death to retrieve his soul at the cost of her own magic. Unlike most magic users, Allie carries magic within her and doesn't have to draw on the city wells--but technology created by her malevolent father may have made magic portable for everyone, including the Veiled, evil ghosts who think the infinitely reusable magic disks are their route to immortality in the world of the living. Allie's adventures are gripping and engrossing, with an even, clever mix of humor, love, and brutality.

Jaz Parks #7
11/08/10
Jaz Parks here. I. Am. Pissed. Just as Vayl and I arrive in Morocco to secure an ancient artifact, he wakes up calling me by another woman's name. And it's not even a good one. But since any form of argument transforms him into an unholy terror, I'm forced to play along until the gang and I can figure out what kind of power has so vastly altered his perceptions. So it's time for me to do what any well-trained assassin in my position might do. I attack. What follows is a hair-raising, breath-taking bullet train ride to the finish as the crew battles on multiple fronts. I now know what I have to do - I must return to hell one last time.

Crossroads
Southern Arcana #2
11/2/10
He’s the last man she should ever want. She’s the last woman he can ever have. Coming from a family with psychic gifts, Derek Gabriel was aware of but separate from the dangers of the supernatural world, until a rogue wolf shifter stripped away his humanity. The change he barely survived didn’t drive him insane, but the cultural bias against him as an inferior transformed wolf might. And it doesn’t help that he’s fallen for the daughter of the most powerful wolf in the country. Almost from the moment she was born, Nicole Peyton started planning her escape from the strict confines of elite shapeshifter society, an old-fashioned world where women are valued only for their bloodlines and bank accounts. In New Orleans she has a bar she loves, friends in decidedly low places, and a smoldering sensual tension with an incredibly attractive and deliciously unsuitable man. Their forbidden longing erupts into unbridled need—until Nick’s sister burns into town with a strike team hard on her heels. Saving her means Nick has to play by the Conclave’s rules…and give up the man she is growing to love. Unless Derek does something completely crazy—issue a challenge that could shake the foundations of their world. Warning: This book contains forbidden lust, strip poker, instinct-driven sex in odd places, devious shapeshifters, and love and loss in a world of paranormal politics and supernatural schemes.

And not just for a taste of her, but for the whole delicious feast!

In his position as Tracker for the SnowDancer pack, Drew Kincaid must rein in rogue changelings who've lost control of their animal halves- even if it means killing those who've gone too far. But nothing in his life has prepared him for the battle he must now wage-to win the heart of a woman who makes his body ignite...and who threatens to enslave his wolf.

The Shifters
11/1/10
Charged with overseeing the shapeshifters of New Orleans, Caitlin MacDonald has her reasons for being wary of their kind. So when charismatic bounty-hunting shifter Ryder Malloy blows into town claiming to be on the trail of a horde of malevolent entities called Walk-Ins, Caitlin has no reason to trust him—with her city or her heart. But as tourists start dropping dead from supernatural possession, Cait must team with Ryder to navigate his shadowy, ephemeral world... Fiercely independent, Ryder usually hunts alone—but this case requires an exception. To prevent a supernatural massacre, he needs the beautiful Keeper on his side—and, if possible, even closer. In his world, appearances can be deceiving and deadly. And the only way they'll survive is if this woman who tempts him like no other trusts in him completely...

Danice Carter is not one for glass slippers. A stilettos-wearing lawyer at one of Manhattan’s most elite establishments, Danice has a very strong grip on reality. So when she’s asked by one the firm’s founding partners to take on a personal case, Danice knows she’s in for the opportunity of a lifetime. Private investigator McIntyre Callahan’s was only following his powerful client’s orders: Find Rosemary—at all costs. Instead, he’s found a super-hot lawyer prowling around looking for answers he can’t give. The half-human, half-Fae Mac tries to warn Danice that she’s way in over her head—that Rosemary may roam among The Others, and may have dangerous ties to the Unseelie Court—but she won’t be deterred. Captive Spirit
Dark Crescent Sisterhood #4
11/23/10
Saving humanity from the supernatural has been challenging lately—even for a well-trained earth Sybil like Bela Argos, who must harness the magic of a fractious group of warrior sisters and battle a new wave of paranormal attacks. Another challenge is Duncan Sharp, the hunky NYPD detective who might turn into a demon overnight and devour Bela in her sleep. Still, the darkness taking over Duncan’s body can’t stop the molten heat unleashed by the intense attraction between them. Duncan has two major problems: First, he has the soul of a suspected serial killer hitching a ride on his vibe. Worse (yes, worse) he’s got a demonic fever raging inside that promises a world of hurt for everybody, especially Bela. Now he’s all about getting even with the demons that put this freak curse in his blood—satanic forces that dare to unleash their savage lust on Duncan’s soul, his city, and the woman he loves.

  6. I'm actually not a big reader of Urban Fantasy/Paranormal fiction. I prefer fantasy and scifi. But strangely enough, I love them as television shows (Angel ftw!)

  7. Tez thanks for the links. I mostly listed them because some people may have still been expecting to see them and of course a small dig at Dorchester.

Jessica Gaiman fans seem to be the most dedicated I have ever seen. Lots of other good choices too.

Michele I have the book but haven't had the time to get to it yet. It has had great buzz.

  10. Another great list. I check it out every month!

I need to add to the raves about Greyfriar. A truly unique twist to the vampire myth.

  11. Jess buying all the speculative fiction titles each month that I would like to have is a challenge because not only are there great UF titles but there is still the YA, Fantasy and SF titles too to choose from.

Thanks Patricia. It's good to hear that the story is as good as the cover. On a separate note, I am going to have to figure a way to tie in your Vampire lists with my monthly lists so that folks can visit you for a Vampires only perspective.

  12. C. J. Henderson's "Brooklyn Knight" has been on my to-read list for a while. Good to see it's getting some renewed publicity.

Just picked up Allyson James' "Firewalker" last night. Now, if I can just get off my butt and finish "Stormwalker" first, I'll be all set!
