Mockingjay 13 District Blog Tour - District 2

Less then three weeks until the final book in the Hunger Games trilogy releases and today is District 2's day on the official 13 District Tour for Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. We're pretty excited here at SciFiGuy.ca to finally learn what fate holds in store for Katniss, Peeta, Haymitch and the revolutionaries. To celebrate this long awaited event, I have a terrific giveaway courtesy of Scholastic Books. One reader will have the opportunity  to win a unique fleece throw blanket embroidered with the Mockingjay emblem. All you have to do to enter is tell us about your favourite character, or if you haven't read the books yet, tell us how you plan to keep warm if you win the blanket. The giveaway is open until August 18 (Midnight EST) and is open to US and Canadian residents. My character? I love that tough old coot Haymitch. Without him, Katniss and Peeta would not have survived as long as they have.

Haymitch Abernathy
Haymitch Abernathy is the Hunger Games mentor to Katniss and Peeta and a survivor of the 50th  Hunger Games. He's gruff, rude and an alcoholic, but a genius at games strategy (and he secretly likes Katniss and Peeta). When I think of an actor to portray Haymitch, I think of Nick Nolte. Here are some highlights of Haymitch and his role in the Hunger Games so far.
  • Only living tribute from District 12
  • A survivor from the 50th Hunger Games
  • Haymitch was sixteen at the time of his games
  • He's haunted by the death of his fellow tribute
  • Trains and mentors each year's tributes
  • Helps Katniss and Peeta to win the 74th and 75th games
  • Was originally selected as tribute for the 75th games, but Peeta volunteered to replace him
  • Possible member of the rebellion
Haymitch also has a wry sense of humour as you can see from a couple of Haymitch quotes - -
"...you've got about as much charm as a dead slug..."
"You and a syringe against the Capitol? See, this is why no one lets you make the plans."

ABOUT SUZANNE COLLINS:

Suzanne is breaking new ground with The Hunger Games trilogy.  Poignant and rich with edge-of-your-seat pacing, this series is set in a district that evolved from the ruins of what was once known as North America.   "It's hard to choose one element that inspired The Hunger Games," says Suzanne.  "Probably the first seeds were planted when, as an eight-year-old with a mythology obsession, I read the story of Theseus.  The myth told how in punishment for past deeds, Athens periodically had to send seven youths and seven maidens to Crete where they were thrown in the Labyrinth and devoured by the monstrous Minotaur.  Even as a third grader, I could appreciate the ruthlessness of this message.  ‘Mess with us and we'll do something worse than kill you.  We'll kill your children.'  Other early influences would have to include watching  too many gladiator movies which dramatized the Romans' flair for turning executions into popular entertainment, my military specialist dad who took us to battlefields for family vacations, and touring with a sword fighting company in high school.  But it wasn't until the much more recent experience of channel surfing between reality TV programming and actual war coverage that the story for this series came to me."

Suzanne Collins has had a successful and prolific career writing for children's television. She has worked on the staffs of several Nickelodeon shows, including the Emmy-nominated hit Clarissa Explains it All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo. She received a Writer's Guild of America nomination in animation for co-writing the critically acclaimed Christmas special, Santa, Baby!

Suzanne currently lives in Connecticut with her family and a pair of feral kittens they adopted from their backyard.  For more information, please visit www.suzannecollinsbooks.com

  1. My pick? Katniss. Hear her roar!

  2. is this where I'm supposed to post my fave character?
My favorite character is definitely Gale. Gale is the epitome of a "good man". He loves Katniss with all his heart and is willing to do anything and everything for her and their families. He is strong and determined. He is the person who has always been there to support Katniss.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Without a doubt, Gale. He's been so good to Katniss & stuck with her during everything! Perfect man/boy!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Rue was my favorite character, Katniss is a great character too. But Rue just makes me think of when I was little. I was alot like her, well not flying through the trees but stealthy, on the defense, and cunning.

  5. That fleece looks so comfy! I'd have to say my favorite character so far is Cinna. I think there's definitely more to him than meets the eye and I hope we'll find out what in Mockingjay. I also hope that they can do justice to his costumes for Katniss when the movie comes out!

  6. I love Katniss a lot and all the characters, but I think my sentimental favorite is Gale. He's a stand-up guy and always tries to do the right thing, taking care of their families and bearing up to punishment in book 2 like a trouper, and more than that, he hasn't let the state of the world turn him into a cynic. He's a dreamer and a revolutionary and determined to have democracy.

  7. My fav is Peeta. He is a great friend to Katniss and has helped her throughout the hunger games...twice, as she did him. He also gave her the bread when she needed it the most... He is the reason she hunts. He made her live. So my fav is the boy with the bread... Team Peeta :)

  8. My favorite character would probably be Buttercup. I love that scruffy old cat! He is tough on the outside, muddy coat, nose smashed in, half of one ear, belly swollen with worms, eyes the color of rotting squash. But on the inside he`s loyal and comforting and loving. :D

  9. My favorite character is prim (primrose) and her mom, Because they had to stay behind when katniss had to compete in the 74th hunger games. They stuck it out and Her mom didnt run away and leave prim by herself. This blanket looks very fluffy And comforrtable...

  10. My favorite character is Rue. She's sweet and innocent, yet tough in her own way.

  11. I think Peeta is my favorite. He's so nice!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I love Peeta! He's full of love for Katniss even though it's unrequited.

    ReplyDelete
  13. My favorite is Haymitch too! He's drunk and sarcastic, but also funny and serious about the rebellion and keeping Katniss and Peeta alive. He is one of the main people in charge of the upcoming rebellion. He adds so much to the books and I can't wait to see what he does in Mockingjay!

    ReplyDelete
  14. My favorite character is Peeta. He really loves Katniss and would do anything for her.

  15. I like most of the characters but my favorite would have to be Rue, she's so innocent and sweet but tough when she has to be. I was crying buckets when she died :( My next pick would be Gale though, he's just such a good guy.

  16. My favorite character would have to be Gale. He's Katniss' best friend and always there for her.

  17. There are far too many powerful characters to pick a single one! If pressed, however, I'd have to go with Peeta. His sacrificial love is a testament to the resilience of humanity in the face if inhumane circumstance.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I choose Madge Undersee. There's a LOT more to that girl, and I think we're going to learn it all in Mockingjay. She's cool and collected, and has some family history with the symbol of revolution. Never underestimate the quiet types!

  21. I've only read The Hunger Games, and I am itching to get my hands on Catching Fore before Mockingjay is released. As for my favorite character so far, I adore Peeta. I didn't like him much until the last third of the book. He won my heart over with his honest, witty lines and sarcasm!

    THANK YOU!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Going with Peeta - just love the charisma he has, and the whole fact that he never backs down, despite the absolute awful luck he has - getting into the games twice, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Katniss Everdeen, she's smart, powerful and she's just amazing. Plus, who wouldn't love her and Peeta? XD

Thank you so much and have a nice day :D

  24. I haven't read the series yet but i will be picking the complete series up on the 24th. I have to everyone speaks soo highly of it and i feel like im missing out on something great! That blanket looks so warm and soft adn cuddly. My reading room is in my basement and when it is winter you can't sit down there for more than 5 min without your hands turning to ice cubes so a nice new warm blanket would be perfect to read a great book series...dont you think so?

  25. I'd say Peeta. The fact that he's always loved Katniss is so sweet and he really knows what Katniss goes through at the Hunger Games!

  26. Katniss is my favorite character. She's so intelligent, crafty and intriguing. Thanks for the giveaway.

  27. My favorite character is Peeta. He's so caring for other people, especially Katniss, it makes my heart melt. Plus, he's a baker and cake decorater. I'm in love with baking. If only I could be with Peeta <3

    ReplyDelete
  28. My favorite character is Cinna. I think there is so much more to him than meets the eye, he obviously has a hidden agenda. It makes me want to know his backstory, how connected he is to the rebellion behind the scenes. Did he intend on making the District 12 tributes so incendiary (pun intended lol), or did he just adapt wonderfully to what Katniss did? He really intrigues me. Plus, all the clothes that are described sound so beautiful, Cinna is obviously a creative genuis. Love him!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I haven't read the books yet because I plan on reading them all together under my snugly Hunger Games blanket...who cares if it will be the end of August (and still VERY warm outside) when Mockingjay comes out?! I'm determined to snuggle under that blanket and not come out until I have finished all three books!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I like President Snow, because he destroyed District 12, making for one of the best story moments I've read in ages.

    ReplyDelete
  31. One of my favorite characters (I have many) is Haymitch. I like his sense of humor and I like how strategic he is. At the beginning of the hunger games when he's acting like a drunk old fool - I think he may be a bit drunk because of the responsibility he has over keeping the tributes alive and they've all been killed, and his own time in the games, but I think the foolishness is just an act to make the other districts underestimate the district 12 tributes and their very smart mentor.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I fear being shunned, but haven't read the books yet. But my daughter talks about them so much, I will wrap myself up in that blanket, and read the first two waiting for the third....but not as impatiently as she is waiting for the third!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think my favorite character would have to be Haymitch as well (: I just absolutely love his witty sarcasm and dry humor, and I love the way he's more intelligent then people think.
Peeta is a close second, though!
    I really hope I win <3

    ~Susan* :]

  34. I agree--Haymitch all the way. His one-liners are classic! And I always pictured Nick Nolte as Haymitch (I even used his pic in a Facebook page parody I made).

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh, hands down, Peeta!! I just finished Catching Fire last night & I cannot imagine Katniss without sweet Peeta. He would do anything for her & he has a heart of gold! He is just GOOD in his core

BTW, I love the picture you put up of Nick Nolte portraying Haymitch. It's perfect!!

  36. Katniss! Definately Katniss.

  37. My favorite is Cinna. Not only is he kind and likable, but he shows that anyone can do something. Rebellion doesn't mean you need to raise a fit or plot violence. He used something as seemingly harmless as fashion to make a real statement. There's any number of ways to make a difference and be heard. His way was very interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Haymitch is a great choice! He kind of pulls through when he has to. Loved your post. We in the mysterious District 13 are always curious about what is happening elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  39. My favorite character would be Rue--I cried when she died.

  40. There are so many awesome characters in The Hunger Games, I don't know if I could pick just one. I see that other people are having that same dilemma. I am without a doubt in Katniss's corner and how could you not love her? My favorite character is Cinna because at first, I kind of passed him off, like ok, he is just some stylist, but he was rebellious in his own way. Thanks so much for hosting!

    P.S. Team PEETA!

  41. I don't really have a fav. character; I have three!!!! And that would be Katniss, Haymitch, and Cinna!!! Katniss is a strong girl character, but she also has a soft side. Haymitch...well Haymitch is Haymitch!! LOL And Cinna is just flat out awesome!!! I love him so much!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. PEETA. Hands down. Even though she hardly appreciates it, Peeta does so much for her and would risk his life to keep her safe. And I happen to love the fact that he can bake. That just adds to his awesomeness.

I love him so much!!!

  45. My favorite character? It's probably a tie between Gale and Cinna.

I love Gale because he's always trying to do the right thing and he doesn't obsess or fawn over Katniss - he lets her be as strong as she is. He's willing to do anything for his family and for Katniss' as well.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks there's more to Cinna than meets the eye. He knows stuff - you just know he knows stuff. I hope he's still alive - my gut says he is.

  47. Katniss is my favorite. Once she shot that arrow into the apple at the Gamemaker's table, she had me cheering that a new, tough heroine had taken the literary stage.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I am probably the only loser who has not read these yet :( My friend is letting me borrow the first one as soon as she is done - can't wait. Anyways, love the fleece - it will be perfect to have while i'm reading Hunger Games for the first time!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Katniss and Peeta. I can't choose between the two. :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. My absolutely favorite character from the series is Cinna. He's got courage and is absolutely brilliant! There's so much more to why he's doing what he is, I just wish we knew even more about him. Amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  51. My favorite is Peeta, without any doubt.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Of course I love Katniss , but who doesn't. The other person I love is Cinna. I think Katniss owes him so much and I love how secretly he defies the capital.

The Blanket is so Great, I hope Im lucky enough to win it!

  53. I think Katniss embodies strength and intelligence. She is an amazing character!

  54. Peeta is definitely my favorite!

  55. Katniss because she is self sacrificing, strong but not arrogant.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Mine is definitely Gale!!! I love him! He's always there for Katniss. He helps her and her family through all of their problems, even though he has plenty of his own. Gale is wonderful!

    ReplyDelete
  57. My favorite character is Katniss. She's so brave and quick on her feet, such a strong female character! Love her!

    Kristin.close@gmail.com

    ReplyDelete
  58. How to pick? I don't usually pick favorites when I read books!
I'd probably have to say Katniss--because the books are primarily written from her standpoint, and she's a tough chick. I love that she's a tomboy, and can still be pretty if she *has* to.

    ReplyDelete
  59. My favorite character is probably Haymitch as well. Of course I love and root for Katniss, but I find Haymitch and his background intriguing. It appears we're going to learn a lot more about him and what he's been doing behind the scenes to help develop the revolution in Mockingjay and I anticipate that we'll grow to love him even more.

    ReplyDelete
  60. My favourite character (of course besides Catniss) is either Haymitch or Cinna... Haymitch always surprises you... just when you think he's lost in the bottle or worthless he always has something up his sleeve... and Cinna is just amazing. There's more to the character than we plainly see... he's with Catniss right before every entrance to the games and he's like that confidant to her that she can lean on and seems to be a kind of strength to her... plus I think he knows something about everything!

Personally I love blankets :) I'm always cold and love using all types of blankets :D Especially when reading books!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. My favorite character has to be Katniss. But I'm looking forward to Mockingjay to find out more about President Snow, the red-headed Avox girl (I think she's Snow's daughter - else why wouldn't she have been killed, too?), and Chaff - I think he's still alive! (The cannon Katniss heard just before destroying the force field was probably her own - Johanna cut the tracker from her arm). I also think that Katniss's father is still alive and in District 13!! (Yes, I'm a conspiracy theorist!)

    ReplyDelete
  62. My favorite character is Katniss.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I must agree with Haymitch. He is so awesome and funny!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Cinna, because he is such a realistic character who encourages Katniss when she needs it the most, in a way nobody else does.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Call me a fangirl, but Peeta.
Who else is selfless, funny, sweet, artistic, brave, strong, gentle, protective, and overall amazing? And he bakes! He's always trying to do the right thing and he helps Katniss through so much. He's by far the best character in the series.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Suzanne Collins is really good at developing characters. So many of the characters, even the minor ones, have well-developed traits. It's very hard to pick just one favorite, but if pressed I would go with Katniss. I love that unlike many girls her age, she doesn't pretend to be someone she's not in an effort to get boys to like her. She thinks and plans and rationalizes. She has developed under the perfect storm of circumstances to make her the figurehead of the revolution. But going against the capital isn't easy for her, like it wouldn't be for most people. She's certainly not without flaw, but she is an example of a strong woman. I'm glad I've had the chance to get to know her.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I agree with you-- Haymitch is my fave character. He's crazy like a fox. I was hoping he was that crazy enough to replace his moonshine with water so that he pretended he was a drunkard while planning the rebellion. And I like his dry humor. "Stay alive."

    ReplyDelete
  68. *spoilers*

I loved Rue. I remember when I realized that only one tribute would make it out, and it probably wasn't going to be little Rue. :( Her death scene was very sad and sweet.

    And that blanket is amazing!

  69. gotta love Katniss. A perfect heroine: thoughtful, clever, intelligent....

    ReplyDelete
  70. Well I love almost all the characters in the Hunger Games... but my favorite would have to be Gale. He isn't mentioned much in the first book, but he reminds me of a rock. He's always there for support no matter what. He loves Katniss and is all around amazing :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think my favorite would be Peeta. He loves unconditionally and I think he's much smarter than we realize!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I will definitely tell anyone who asked that my favorite character is Katniss. As obvious as this is, she's so strong and mature for her age.

But she's not mature, at the same time. She doesn't understand relationships really. She's deep. I want to know more about her.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I love Cinna. He's pillar of strength and stability, a very down-to-earth character which is refreshing in a book filled with eccentricity and intrigue. He is very intelligent and wildly talented. He'd be a wonderful friend to have, not to mention the clothes he designs make me drool! (at least the ones I imagine!)

    ReplyDelete
  74. Rue is my favorite character. I was constantly rooting her on. I cried my eyes out when she died. I just felt she was so little, but was so brave inside and out. Go Rue!

    ReplyDelete
  75. My favorite by far is Rue... innocence in a deadly little package :)

    ReplyDelete
  76. My favorite character is definitely Cinna. He is the only character who isn't wanting something from Katniss. He's a true friend and is actually there for her no matter what. He is sweet and kind and full of amazing ideas. He cares about Katniss just because he truly loves her, as an amazing friend.

    ReplyDelete
  77. My favourite charater has to be Thresh. He is honourable and a true fighter through and through.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Cinna is awesome. I love how he's always finding little ways to thumb his nose at the Capitol, and then big ways, too.

    ReplyDelete
  79. My favorite character is Peeta. I adore him and the unrequited love he has for Katniss. Of course, Katniss is a great character, too. :) I absolutely love Peeta though.

By the way, it was my mother who turned me on to this series. She is a children's librarian, and had just finished a book club meeting about this book, when she handed it to me and asked me to read it. I was hesitant because it's way out of my genre, and age group! I'm an English Professor!

Now, I'm addicted and am in love with the series!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Katniss. She's brave, kind, and always there for her friends.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Cinna is my favorite. he is such a genuine person who saw through the capitol's horrible ways despite being brought up in this superficial world.

    ReplyDelete
  82. It's hard to pick a favourite. Besides Katniss, I would probably pick Peeta. He is true and loyal, and he has cared about Kat for a long time, doing whatever it takes to help her.

  83. My fave character would have to be Cinna. He isn't the typical person you would expect in the Capitol, and he helped Katniss become the "girl on fire". He is, without a doubt, one of the most kind-hearted characters in the book, and he really does have his heart set on helping Katniss.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Katniss is my favorite character because of her strength of character, devotion to her family, and never quitting!

  85. My favorite character, man that's a hard one, I would have to say that Katniss is my favorite. She is so brave and always trying to take care of everyone else, Prim, her mother, even Gale and Peeta. Always trying to make everyone she loves happy. She is also lethal with her bow and very wily.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Less THAN three weeks. I couldn't even begin reading the article...

    ReplyDelete
  87. i love the character is Peeta because he loved Katniss from the beginning, he went through with the plan and he really did love her. He is the kind of character where you really hope for the best and he strives to be that character. That boy is one of a kind in my book.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Gotta say my favorite is Gale. I just love his rugged attractiveness, strong character, and hot temper, but he still has a sweet spot, and that is where Katniss fits in his life.

    ReplyDelete
  89. my favorite character is PEETA, because whenever he's around, Katniss stops having nightmares- and i think we all need a person like that in our lives :]

    ReplyDelete
  90. My favorite character is all of them. All the characters are really dynamic and actually have a personality. It's not like all the characters have the same kind and just bumble around doing nothing. Problems come from each of the characters personalities, much like in real life.
But if I had to chose, it would be Finnick. Finnick is arrogant and a little bit of a player. But then underneath that exterior he was really caring about others.
    <333 I love that.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I love Primrose, she is so sweet and loving! I have a feeling she has a bigger role to play :D

    ReplyDelete
  92. I love them all! And I love Katniss and Gale and Oz, I adore Haymitch.

But poor little Rue has to be my favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Katniss FOR SURE! She rocks ;)

    ReplyDelete
  94. Can I have two? Cinna and Peeta!!! I love them both Cinna for everything he did for her and how he got her so much support and love from a lot of people and Peeta well because he's wonderful and will do anything for Katniss. Yes I'm Team Peeta all the way!!!!

  95. I think Peeta is genuine and sweet. Fingers are crossed that Katniss will save him from the Capitol and toss Gale to the side. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  96. Rue is my favorite character. And after her, Gale. Tough as nails and yet loving. Thanks for the chance to win!

    celialarsen(at)gmail(dot)com

    ReplyDelete
  97. Obviously Katniss. She is the ultimate embodiment of feminine strength, proving that girls can hunt and strategize as well as any boy. Oh, and go Team Peeta!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Peeta! Without Peeta, there would be no Katniss and without Katniss, no rebellion, ect. And he planned to die for Katniss and give her everything.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I like Cinna. There's something mysterious about him; I really hope we get his story in Mockingjay. He understands that actions speak louder than words, and he had to know that some of his actions would lead to trouble, but he didn't let that stop him. I think he was a major part of Katniss' success, because he knew how to work the crowd, and he understood how essential the crowd was in influencing the Gamemasters. Cinna, mon!

    ReplyDelete
  100. My favorite person would have to be Rue. I think she just fought so bravly in the games and did very well considering her young age. :)

    ReplyDelete
  101. My favorite character is Peeta. The whole does he love her or is he playing a mind game throughout the first book is great!

    ReplyDelete
  102. My favorite person would have to be Rue. I think she just fought so bravly in the games and did very well considering her young age. :)

    ReplyDelete
  103. My favorite character is Katniss, followed by Peeta (sorry, Gale).

But I also loved Rue, in her short appearance. She was little and sweet, yet completely competent and amazingly able to survive so long.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Katniss is my favorite character... so much that I live with her every day after sharing her name with the stray kitty that adopted me...

    ReplyDelete
  105. it is so hard to say who my favorite character is!!! with out each of them the plot wouldn't be what it is!! Katness strong willed and very protective!! Gale trying to keep his family alive while falling in love with someone who can't see it. Peeta putting it all out there with no hope of any of his dreams coming true over and over again! Rue Oh how my heart goes out to Rue. The other Tribute's! There are just so many. So I guess I would have to go with Katniss for if it wan't for her and her view of it all we wouldn't know each person the way we do!

  106. My pick is Cinna, he's got great fashion sense and is very balsy.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I gotta say I absolutely love finnick. :) that guy is loved by all and is still against the capital. Girls fall for him and he likes a crazy girl named annie

    ReplyDelete
  108. Well. I wanted to say Gale, because I love him ;D But loads of people have already picked him so.. I pick Rue!

Rue was so adorable, so tiny, and from the beginning I felt so bad for her, ending up in the Games with absolutely no chance of winning. The way she helped Katniss to the end made me love her even more. I cried so hard when she died. I love that she was so tiny yet so powerful.

  109. Peeta is definitely my favorite character. Katniss would not be alive if not for Peeta watching out for her. His love and devotion to her is infinite. Peeta has suffered so much heartbreak because of her, yet he keeps his head up and stays by Katniss even though he is hurt. He is a great friend to her, even though he wants much more, he surpresses his feelings to keep her friendship...
Any girl would be lucky to have a guy like him! ;) If I had that fleece, I would use it to cuddle up and read more books!

    ReplyDelete
  110. My favorite character is Katniss. She risked her life to save her sister and Peeta. I would keep warm by reading the books while snuggling in the blanket by the fireplace.

    ReplyDelete
  111. My favorite is Peeta. I love his charisma and his love for Katniss. He is genuine, caring, loyal, and while he can sometimes come off as cowardly, I think he's a pretty brave guy.

    ReplyDelete
  112. My pick is definitely, without a doubt Peeta. He has loved Katniss since they were 5 and he saw her the first day of kindergarden in her red dress. He also saved her when she was about to die of hunger. He was willing to get slapped so she could live. Then at the end of the 74th hunger games when they changed the rules back to only one survivor, He was going to let himself bleed out so that she could win and support her family. He also loves her the way that noone can duplicate. He said he loved her the second he saw her, that's how love should be. That's how my mom and my dad were, and next month is their 17th anniversary. That's why Peeta is my favorite character.
    TEAM PEETA ALL THE WAY!!!
I would use the blanket when I'm reading the first 2 books again right before mockingjay comes out, it will be a very special day for me because August 24th is my birthday and the day that Mockingjay comes out. I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  113. I love Petta. He is true to himself and the love scenes are adorable.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Cinna is my favorite. He had the strength of character that despite his being raised within the capital, he was able to see through its guilded facade. I admire his intelligence and creativity. He is the only one the story who doesn't want something from Katniss. He supports her through everything and is there when she most needs it.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I can't choose a favorite!

Katniss and Peeta are so much like people I know. I think that is what makes the books so powerful. These are just normal kids shoved into an impossible situation.

I love Katniss's no nonsense attitude and purity.

I love Peeta's love and sincerity.

I love Haymitch's wisecracks and ability to manipulate Peeta and Katniss.

I just really love every character. Each one of them is fascinating in his or her own way.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Definitely Katniss. :) She's a strong chick, and I like that about her. I can't wait to see how she fares in Mockingjay!

    ReplyDelete
  117. Definitely Katniss. Strong,Smart, independent, and aware of her surroundings.

  119. I know she's dead, but I'd have to say Rue. She was tough when it came to the games and being so young it shows fantastic charastics, bravery, love, and faith. She believed in Katniss to stay with her even though she was in the one place she should have questioned any kind of kindness or assistance. She was strong up until her death, she requested Katniss to stay with her, to keep her strong during her last moments.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Cinna is my favorite. He knows how to give Katniss and Peeta exactly what they need in the PR battle they are waging against the capital. The way he "packages" them for public appearances saves their lives in more than one way.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Cinna is my favorite. He knows how to give Katniss and Peeta exactly what they need in the PR battle they are waging against the capital. The way he "packages" them for public appearances saves their lives in more than one way.

  122. There's a line in my family to read The Hunger Games (currently behind my dad & younger sister), so I'm working on reading the books. My twin loves them though. I would probably use the blanket to keep my feet warm as I read on the couch.

    ReplyDelete
  123. My favorite character is definaltly Peeta. He is the perfect guy. He is so kind and would do anything for Katniss! Team Peeta all the way!

    ReplyDelete
  124. Katniss is definitely my favorite character, because of her resourcefulness, intelligence, strength and heart. But Rue is a close second and I am torn between considering myself Team Peeta or Team Gale!

    ReplyDelete
  125. So many great characters to choose from! I have to say Katniss overall for her intelligence and resourcefulness. But I also have a soft spot for Cinna.

    ReplyDelete
  126. It would be easy to pick Katniss and even Peeta. Who doesn't love a guy who literally sacrifices himself for another? Even so, my favorite character is Gale. Gale is a confidant to Katniss and a true best friend. They both share something Katniss and Peeta don't share....attraction. You can't beat that! Great giveaway....thx!

    ReplyDelete
  127. I would have to go with Katniss. She is such a strong, smart female character. She has grown so much between HG and CF. I can't wait to see how she continues to grow in MJ.

    ReplyDelete
  128. My favorite character is Katniss. She is strong, brave and independent.

    ReplyDelete
  129. My favorite would have to be Peeta. He loves Katniss unconditionally even when she doesn't feel the same way. He is eager to enter the arena the second time in order to protect Katniss even when he knows that means he will probably die. His love for her is so adorable, every girl wants to be loved like Peeta loves Katniss.

    ReplyDelete
  130. My favorite character is Cinna. He helped Katniss with more than just her wardrobe. I'm really hoping that we get to see him in Mockingjay.

    ReplyDelete
  131. My favorite would have to be Miss Katniss Everdeen. She's just not the winner of the 74th Hunger Games (I wouldn't really count the 75th because she blew up the arena and was taken up by Haymitch and Gale).
She's a tough girl who has been through a lot before the Famous 74th Games. At the age of 12 she had take care of her little sister and mother who where both weak after the death of her father. She does whatever she can to keep her family safe. She even took her sister's place as a tribute. She listens to Haymitch (even if she doesn't like him) and keeps both herself and Peeta alive.

She's confused about who she really loves either Peeta or Gale but that adds more to her character. She's only 17 and it's ok to not be sure about love. She's in love with both of them but is not sure which one is the real LOVE. Something a lot of girls can relate to.

Katniss is such a real person. She has her good times and bad times but I love being there with her, like calling Peeta's name when we find out two can win if the they're from the same district. I become apart of as I read it. That's why she's my favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  132. My favorite character is Rue. She is the heart and soul of the book. Her character brought out that which is best in Katniss even after her death! She is the direct line of Katniss to a Mockingjay... the symbol to the rebellion. It killed me when she died but it looks like she lives forever!!!

    ReplyDelete
  133. While I don't agree with Nick Nolte as a good Haymitch...I love the idea of Robert Downey Jr. (remember he was good looking back in the day). Haymitch has a certain appeal along with Peeta. Peeta is in certain love and no matter how bad things seem to get he always has a plan. He understands how Katniss works in regards to her personality. He has charm, sweetness, and a true heart for people. I've been a Peeta fan ever since I read how he fell in love with Katniss.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Like most other people, my favorite is Katniss. :)
She is intelligent, practical and goes to any lengths to care for her little sister. A character as bold, strong and courageous as her is a good role model, especially for me.
Katniss reminds me of what's really important in life. Not money or stuff, but family and friends who care about you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  135. I love all of them. I don't think I can pick.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I would have to say that my favorite character so far is Peeta. He is always so nice to Katniss. It is so sweet how he loved her ever since he saw her at school when they were little, and has been trying to impress her ever since. Peeta would do anything for Katniss, and she knows it. He loves her with all of his heart, and i think deep down, Katniss loves him too. He is so loyal to her! Haymitch was right when he said Katniss doesn't deserve Peeta, and she really doesn't. But because Peeta loves her so much, Katniss needs to realize she loves him too. Katniss would most likely not be alive if she didn't have Peeta in the Games with her, because he started the whole love affair that got people interested in the kids from District 12. I started crying after the Games when Katniss told Peeta she didnt really love him, you could tell how hurt he was. Peeta is just a nice guy, and if he isn't with Katniss, he said he has no reason to live. Peeta will support Katniss no matter what.

If I win the blanket(which looks wonderful!), I plan on snuggling up with a mug of hot chocolate on my couch and re-reading the series(again). The Hunger Games is definately my favorite series, and I've been counting down the days until Mockingjay comes out!

    Thank You,
    Taylor

  137. For me, it's a toss up. I really like Rue, but... you know.

Really? Aside from the main characters, I looove Cinna, and Effie Trinket. I'm sorry! I like all the characters, even the baddies. They're all so well developed, I think. *sigh* I can't wait to find out what happens next!

    ^_^

  138. My favorite character is probably a cliche one to pick, but I adore Katniss! I love how she is completely flawed, but her heart is in the right place. Straight from the beginning, she sacrifices herself for her little sister.

  139. Believe it or not, my favorite character of the book (though not in it a lot & not at all physically) would have to be Katniss' father. I realize he wasn't really a main character in the book but when he was alive, he gave Katniss the most normal life he could in such a depressing atmosphere. When he died, his family survived because of the time and knowledge he shared with Katniss. I think that mentally he helped her because of the memories but physically because of the things he had taught her. (the area, hunting...etc.)

Now...even though I did read the book I will share with you how I would get cozy with that blanket! I would sit on the couch after the kids went to bed with a nice, warm mocha, wrapped in my cozy, fleece, "Mockingjay" blanket & read "Mockingjay". Sounds like a GREAT night to me! :0D

My favourite character is Katniss. She is such a strong young woman, when her mother went into depression after the loss of her father, Katniss untimately became the familes lifeline. She had learned to hunt to obtain food and had also become something the capitol had never wanted to create, much like the mockingjay. She has a strong will to live and is very clever and stealthy, she had to be to win the hunger games. She was able to figure out Haymitch's clues, and figure out everything she needed to keep herself as well as her family and friends alive. When Gale became old enough to work in the mines, she still made sure their family had food. Katniss will always be my favourite.

  141. Though I initially disliked her - what with her talk about drowning Prim's cat - I would have to say Katniss is my favourite. She's strong, independent, and intelligent - a great role model for young girls!

    ReplyDelete
  142. Like so many others, I adore Gale. He's the mysterious, darling male character that we know so little about and don't get to see often enough!

  144. My favorite character is Katniss, but since she is the main character of the books I'm going to pick my favorite man for her. Gale, of course! Not only is Gale independent but he understands Katniss, he wont keep anything from her and he will tell her anything, even if it hurts him. Gale is also a badass! He hunts, he rants, and he isn't afraid to stand up to the Capitol. Some people may say that Gale didn't make his move until Peeta did--*cough*Peeta Lovers*cough*-- but I think that, on the day of the reaping, Gale did try to make his move. He asked her to run away with him. To me, Peeta missed his chance. If he REALLY does love Katniss then he never made friends with her, never got to know her, the only thing memorable that Peeta did that stuck with me was the bread, but Gale helps feed them everyday. Peeta trys to keep Katniss from harm, but Gale KNOWS that Katniss can take care of herself. After the Games Katniss recrudesce and her feelings were out in the open. Gale was the one who stayed friends with her and didn't hold it against her. This is why Gale is my favorite character other than Katniss and why he is my favorite person to be with Katniss. He is lovable and caring, while at the same time he is deadly and cunning.

  145. My favorite is definetely Katniss! She has skill, courage, bravery and confidence. She is also very touching at times like when Rue died(SO SAD!)and when she was taking care of Peeta in the cave(SO SWEET)and sitting with Gale and comforting him when he was injured. She is independent and awesome! She toughs it out when in hard times and she has the courage to go against the capitol.DOWN WITH THE CAPITOL!!!;)TEAM KATNISS!!

  146. Going to have to go with Katniss. I really want her to survive this book and kick some District butt.

    ReplyDelete
  147. My favorite character is Peeta. He's such a genuinely good person, and he's always out to protect Katniss, even at the risk of his own life or safety.

    Examples:
    1) The first time Peeta risks getting hurt is when he purposely drops bread in the fire (gets a beating from his mom) so he can give the two loaves of bread to a starving Katniss and her family. He's the reason she's still alive!
    2) He joins the Career Tributes at the start of the Games to keep them off Katniss's trail.
    3) He risks his life protecting Katniss after the attack of the tracker jackers. This is when he's (almost) fatally wounded.
    4) In Catching Fire, when Peeta first hears about the Quarter Quell, he doesn't run and hide like Katniss, but he runs over to Haymitch to BEG him to let him back into the arena, so he can protect Katniss.

Everything Peeta does is unselfish. He truly loves Katniss and would do anything for her, which makes me love Peeta even more (and wish that I were Katniss)!

    Team Peeta!

  148. My favorite character is Peeta:) I love how loyal he is, how he'd do anything for Katniss. He reminds me of my husband in many ways:) I make Hunger Games inspired jewelry at TheMeadow.etsy.com and one of my favorite pieces is the Peeta's cupcake bracelet. I just love everything about him!

  149. I am always so impressed by Peeta. I'd have to say he is my favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Peeta has been my favorite since the very beginning. He's the epitome of the perfect guy. Loving, protective...he even looked out for Katniss when she was younger and even throughout the Games. What else could you ask for?

  151. I am going to have to say Cinna. Who can't love the smooth talking, but secretly rebellious stylist?!

My favourite is Katniss. She is a very strong, physically and emotionally, young woman. She had placed upon herself a huge role when her mother had gone into depression about the loss of her father. She didnt stand back and wait for something or someone to help, she took her own action. She learned to hunt to keep her family fed and took great care of her little sister Prim. She is clever and steathly, she was able to figure out Haymitch's clue while in the arena and was smart enough to know how to take down the Careers. Even when Gale became old enough to work in the mines, she still made sure his family had food. My favourite will always be Katniss.

    ReplyDelete
  153. My favorite character would definitely have to be Gale. Despite everything that has happened to him and his family he is always pushing and trying to make life better, not for himself, but for his family. He has taken on the burden of having his name re-entered into the Hunger Games drawing multiple times, where as he will not allow his other siblings to do so. He has taken on such great responsibilities in order to protect and feed his family. Many of these responsibilities would weigh most people down, but Gale pushes through it and endures all for the sake of his family. If Katniss was to go with him there would be no doubt that Gale would protect her with all his might. He is courageous, enduring, and chivalrous. A true role-model. Thats why Gale is my pick.

Now give me the blanket!!!! jk ^^
But seriously i do want the blanket.

  154. My best friend just moved into her first apartment. She's twenty-two and trying to raise her eighteen-month old son the best that she can; that little boy is her life. She has a little balcony in the back of her apartment where she reads to him every night before bed, and where she is (finally) reading the Hunger Games after he goes to bed. They just moved in and don't have much, but I think that blanket would be perfect for them.

She's only about halfway into the first book, but I know she's going to love it. She already wants to get the mockingjay tattoo with me!

    ReplyDelete
  155. Peeta! He's a sweetheart and the only sane person around. Katniss needs to wake up and realize that!

  157. My favorite is definitely Peeta. His sympathy and protectiveness make him the perfect choice for Katniss!

Hope we can get the blanket somewhere even if we don't win!

    ReplyDelete
  158. I really like Katniss! She is such a strong character. But my favorite to read about has to be Effie Trinket. She's just so damn oblivious and needy! I think I like her character (not her herself) because to dislike her would be pointless. Talk about conformist! Effie's oblivious nature is just interesting. :o)

    ReplyDelete
  159. my favorite character is PEETA!!!! He is awesome. i like him because I am a real mush and I love the way he shows how much he loves Katniss. Also, he can bake cupcakes. (I love cupcakes)

    ReplyDelete
  160. Peeta....I Love Peeta. I hope Katniss picks Peeta.

  161. I love Peeta. I wish my husband were as protective of me as he is of Katniss.

  162. It's hard to choose a favorite character from these books because each character has something about them that I absolutely love. Each one is unique and without one the books would be missing a huge puzzle piece. But if I had to choose, which is extremely difficult to do, I would probably pick Cinna. From the first time we were introduced to Cinna while Katniss was being groomed for the games I knew that there was something about him that was different. He seems like an extremely caring character and is someone that I would love to have as a friend. He makes the ultimate sacrifices and that shows true courage. My friends, who also love the books, and I are always joking around by saying "twirl for me" or "let's have a chat" whenever one of us is having a bad day and it works. Cinna just makes me feel better :)

Now for the blanket... Well I travel all over the world working in orphanages and I just spent a year living in Africa. Nights can get pretty cold and sometimes it can be kind of lonely too. I typically bring the Hunger Games books with me to keep me busy at night while I'm traveling so if I had the blanket that'd be even better!

    ReplyDelete
  163. Oohh. That's a hard decision. While I like Gale because of his devotion to Katniss, I also like Madge because she seems nice (and she's Katniss's friend). Plus she game Katniss the famous (in our world) mockingjay pin. There is Peeta with his undying love for Katniss that began when they were both five. Then, of course, there is Haymitch who is funny and gets straight to the point is amazing as well...

They're all just so cool. I can't decide.

    ReplyDelete
  164. My favorite character is Finnick Odair. He may seem like an odd choice, being such a flirt, and being a fairly cold killer, but I feel that he is in actuality quite a gentle person, as seen by his love for Annie and Mags. Finnick isn't necessarily kind and open like Peeta, but he's soft and hurt enough to care about Annie and to take care of Katniss and Peeta, neither of whom like him, if for the sake of Panem's people. Moreover, he takes his lumps in life without complaint; he gave up Mags, he put Peeta's life above his and accepted his potential death. You also have to admit that compared to Peeta and Katniss' gloomy depression and martyrdom, he makes for nice comic relief.
BTW, I'm just posting this to show some love for Finnick, he seems to be eclipsed!

    ReplyDelete
  167. My favorite character is Katniss! Lately, the most popular female characters in the YA world have been a little, well, weak. So, it is extremely encouraging to see such a strong girl who isn't afraid to be herself. I think she is a great example to young women and I wish she was around when I was younger!

    ReplyDelete
  168. Love all the characters, but I'd have to go with Peeta - he's selfless and clearly loves Katniss unconditionally. Plus, who wouldn't have a heart for the guy who's missing a leg? I'm squarely in Peeta's corner for getting the girl in Book 3!

    ReplyDelete
  169. Katniss is awesome but i love Rue shes so cute and also has some pretty cool skills of her own

    ReplyDelete
  170. My favorite character so far is definitely been Cinna. I think it has to be the fact that he was never afraid to use his talents and defy the capitol. He was never cowardly and he helped Katniss through the Hunger Games and out of the Hunger Games. He also makes beautiful clothes.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Favorite character? Just one!! That's hard. Obviously I love the main characters, but there was something about Rue and Cinna that I also realy liked. It's hard to pick one... I think I'm going with Rue.

I think it is safe to say the Collins wrote an amazing series with amazing characters. Even Haymitch is enjoyable when he probably isn't suppose to be.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Not sure if this is where I'm supposed to post my favorite character or not...
It's hard to pick one. I think I'd have to say Katniss, because there is so much to her. She has had to step up and take care of her family and has learned the hard way how important self-sacrifice can be.
Haymitch is another favorite. He definitely provides sarcastic comedy to this dark story. Plus, as much as he acts like he doesn't care about anyone, you can see that he really does.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Oh...that looks like a really cool blanket! My favorite character would have to be Rue. Who can't love her? She really reminds me of myself...the sweet, innocent, quiet-spoken girl that everyone underestimates. And don't forget her awesome knowledge of plants! Rue really didn't have very much of a chance in the Hunger Games because she was going against other tributes 2 times her size and age, but despite those differences, she did try, and for that I respect her.

    ReplyDelete
  174. i just got Hunger Games but haven't had a chance to read it. I'd use the throw to keep warm while I watch TV during the winter.

    ReplyDelete
  178. My favorite is Peeta! He is sweet and so protective of Katniss!

    ReplyDelete
  179. Finnick is definitely my favour character. He won the hunger games when he was only 14! I love all the scenes that have Finnick in them, he's funny and charming and charismatic...in other words, he's perfect! When we find out that the girl he loves is crazy, and not one of his hundred capitol lovers, it made me like him even more.

    ReplyDelete
  180. I can't choose. Really - I like the tributs. I do like Haymitch and his snarkiness. Katniss and her will to survive. Peeta and his sincere kindness.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Rue. Definitely Rue. She ended up giving Katniss so much, not just skills in the Games but the will to make a stand against the Capitol.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Other than Katniss...

I choose Peeta, I adore him. He has such a rare heart, and amazing personality, his unconditional love and devotion to Katniss is very inspiring.

    ReplyDelete
  183. I love Gale! He's always on the sidelines, but this next book is going to be all about him! Katniss better pick him. Peeta is nice and all, just not right for her!

    ReplyDelete
  184. It's so hard to choose just one favorite! I would pick Gale. He is such a great character, he loves Katniss unconditionally and will always be there for her.

    ReplyDelete
  185. My favorite character is Gale. I think it's a beautiful love story the way Katniss and Gale are clearly meant for eachother, but the whole world sees her as Peeta's girl. It's my opinion that Gale is really strong for being able to still love Katniss and do anything for her and her family, even though he has to watch her kiss Peeta everytime the cameras come on.

    ReplyDelete
  186. My favorite would simply have to be Katniss. Her simple determination to protect others regardless the cost to her is commendable.

I can't wait for my copy to come and to wrap up in my new blanket!

    ReplyDelete
  187. I'm rooting for Peeta. The boy has dedication and is so selfless in his love for Katniss. I just feel like something good has to come his way!!! He ranks right up there with Gilbert Blythe and Mr. Darcy in my favorite fictional men :) Incidentally he is also how I would plan to keep warm :) The baker's boy would make a good cuddling companion!

    ReplyDelete
  188. Fave character is Katniss by far. Her tenacity and relatability make her one of a kind! I also like Gale, but of course Katniss is who I hope will survive against all odds.

    ReplyDelete
  189. I absolutely adore Madge Undersee. I think there's so much more to learn about her in Mockingjay.
I also love how she was the one that gave Katniss the mockingjay pin; it's so awesome to think that she was the one who gave the rebels a symbol to rally behind. I think that she is a major part of the rebellion, even if she's not as out there as Katniss.

    ReplyDelete
  190. Madge is my favorite character.

She's grossly under-appreciated, even by her friend Katniss. She's loyal, brave, sweet and goodnatured.

    Here's why she's awesome:
    - Gave Katniss the mockingjay pin. This automatically gives her the status of AMAZING, but it also makes me wonder. Did she do this just because Katniss was her friend, or did she know about the upcoming uprisings, seeing as her father was mayor? Perhaps she's a rebel!
    - She's Katniss' only girlfriend. She not only gives Katniss her token, but she kisses Katniss on the cheek. That symbolizes "true friendship" for Katniss and I think it's really sweet.
    - They go to each other's houses in CF. Everyone needs girl time, and Katniss never really had it before. It's good she's catching up.
    - Madge gives Gale medication after he gets beaten even though Gale was rude to her and made fun of her status as mayor's daughter in HG.
    - She isn't gossipy or condescending or rude. She listens and is quiet and nice and sweet.
    - Her aunt was possibly Haymitch's love. Makes me like her family cause I like Haymitch.
    - I really hope she made it out alive after the shocking "There is not District 12" line. Please have made it out!

Madge would be a great friend to have, and I wish I knew someone like her. She's not a major player in the Hunger Games or in the rebellion (yet) but she sits quietly in the background biding her time. I can only hope she gets her time to shine in Mockingjay.

  191. I love Katniss. She is strong, smart and very resourceful. My second favorite is Gale. He truly stands up for what he believes in and he loves Katniss.

  192. Although I love all of the characters (one of the things that makes the books so good is the well thought out character development) I think my favorite would have to be Peeta. Even though he keeps having his heart broken by Katniss he continues to stick by her and be her friend.

  193. My favorite character is Rue. She has a fiery spirit and an ethereal quality about her that marks her as one to watch throughout The Hunger Games. And, she becomes such an important element, if not the actual spark that began the rebellion itself!! I cry every time I read that part, and have reread the books four times waiting for Mockingjay's release on 8/24. If I won, I'd use the blanket to keep warm, and think of all those cold nights Katniss, Peeta and Rue suffered in the Arena. Thank you for this opportunity. What a great prize!

  194. I'd pick Haymitch. Eventhough he's a total drunk, he's there when you need him.

  195. the first two books were absolutely astounding with their wonderfully structured characters! Katniss would definately be my favorite of the two for her boldness and fortitude to push through the hardest of times, but in the first book, one of my very favorite characters was Rue. I loved how meek and kind she was while at the same time possessed awesome survival skills. i couldn't get over her sweetness, and it killed me, too, when she died. *sorry for the spoiler!

  196. My definite favorite will have to be, without any doubt, Rue.
Rue to me is the sacrificial lamb in this story. She died innocently at the hands of the Capitol. She shows us as readers and Katniss that this has to change. That the Capitol can not possibly remain the way it is. Rue symbolizes the utter cruelty of the Capitol. She had no reason to die, no reason other than that she was chosen for the Hunger Games. She was beautiful and innocent, which is why she had to die. She was the opposite of the Capitol. It shows us that anything beautiful in this world has to die. Rue died at the hands of a boy. Yet, her memory lives on in Katniss. Katniss is the mockingjay, the symbol of the rebellion. Rue is one of the reasons she decided to do this. To change this world.
