What she didn't tell anyone was that a dark presence from her past who has been stalking her for a hundred years, since she first left the shores of Ireland. A man who will stop at nothing to possess her. With the help of the D'Artigo sisters, Siobhan must stop him before he destroys everything she loves and everything she's built in her new life.

A Touch of Dead
(Sookie Short Story Collection)
10/06/09
Vicky London - A Touch of Dead is a collection of previously published Sookie Stackhouse stories. The five short stories have appeared in various anthologies but are now combined into one volume.
In “Fairy Dust” Sookie finds her mind reading talents in demand when her fairy godmother, Claudine’s sister is murdered. This story takes place after the events of Dead to the World.
In “Dracula Night”, Eric is like a little kid waiting for Santa to show up. It’s the legendary Dracula’s birthday and there’s a big celebration at Fangtasia. Unfortunately, the Dracula who appears is probably not the real thing and Sookie steps in to save the day. This story takes place before Dead as a Doornail.
In “One Word Answer” Sookie is informed of her cousin Hadley’s untimely death. The news is delivered by the half-demon lawyer Mr. Cataliades who is employed by the vampire Queen of Louisiana. The message, however is not as simple as it seems and Sookie will have to puzzle out what really happened to her estranged family member. This story takes place after Dead as a Doornail.
“Lucky” is a lighter story featuring the dynamic duo of Sookie and her witchy roommate Amelia. They combine their talents to uncover they mystery of a break-in at a local insurance office and instead discover the reason why he has such good luck. The action takes place after the book, All Together Dead.
My favorite story in the collection is “Gift Wrap”. Sookie is alone on Christmas Eve and feeling a bit sorry for herself. A unexpected overnight guest brings along some drama and excitement to lift her from her doldrums with a satisfying gift. This story takes place before the book Dead and Gone.

Watching out for the family and friends closest to her but missing the fact that she's being stalked by a murderous enemy who doesn't like hybrids...and absolutely hates Gwen. Malice
YA
10/01/09
Kirkus Reviews - In this hybrid-format horror/fantasy restless teens in search of adventure pass back and forth between their world and Malice-a tenebrous, ruined city stocked with clockwork monsters and other hazards. Seth's suspicions about a string of disappearances are confirmed when he actually spots a vanished acquaintance being killed by toothy attackers in the pages of a strange, hard-to-get comic. Soon he and his best friend, Kady, find a way into that comic's plane, where they discover allies both human and otherwise, as well as hints of a resistance to the evildoers who have wrested the city of Malice from its rightful ruler. Chernett illustrates selected high spots with sections of dark sequential panels filled with jagged shapes, confused action and oddball sound effects: "THOOM! RRRROOOWWRR-RRRUNCH." Eventually all the narrow escapes and ominous scritching sounds in the dark seem repetitive, but for readers who value thrills over psychological depth this series kick-off offers plenty of brisk action. One sequel announced, so far.

By the Mountain Bound
10/27/09
For five hundred years the immortal Children of the Light, einherjar and valkyrie, have lived together in the North of Valdyrgard. They were born out of the Sea, each with a shining crystal sword in his or her hand; they are Angels of Light created in the formation of a new world. But three have come before them, from the death-throes of the old world, Midgard: the world-girdling Serpent, Bearer of Burdens; the Wolf Fenris, eater of the Sun, who now takes the form of an einherjar; and his demon sister, stealer of souls. The Children spend their days feasting, fighting, hunting, and guarding their human charges. But one dreadful day a woman is washed up from the sea, a Lady who is no mortal, though she is not valkyrie either. Thus begins the breaking of the Children of the Light, the tarnishing of their power, and the death of Valdyrgard. By the Mountain Bound is a prequel to Elizabeth Bear’s highly acclaimed All the Windwracked Stars, and tells the painful tale of love and betrayal, sorcery and battle, that led up to the day when Muire was left alone in the snow at the end of the world.

The Knights of the Cornerstone
10/27/09
Publishers Weekly - Blaylock's contemporary fantasy thriller features an intriguing and convincing reluctant hero, amiable cartoonist Calvin Bryson. Bryson's quiet life gets a jolt when his uncle, Al Lymon, invites him to visit New Cyprus, the isolated home of the mysterious Knights of the Cornerstone. Bryson's cousin also sends him a package to take to Lymon, but before Bryson makes it to New Cyprus, the parcel is stolen. Only afterward does Bryson learn it was a decoy, intended to mask the transport of the genuine Veil of Veronica, a legendary relic with magical properties. The plot line begins to sound familiar when Bryson falls for a childhood friend, but as the Knights and their enemies battle for control of the veil, Blaylock (The Digging Leviathan) bolsters the predictable climax with solid prose, summing to an enjoyable read.

It’s a place of islands, forests, mountains and wild oceans, filled with magical denizens. Fionn—the black dragon—calmly tells anyone who will listen that he’s going to destroy the place. Of course he’s a joker, a troublemaker and a dragon of no fixed abode. No one ever believes him. He’s dead serious. Others strive to refresh the magics that built this place. To do so they need the combined magics of all the intelligent species, to renew the ancient balance and compact. There is just one problem. They need a human mage, and dragons systematically eliminated those centuries ago. Their augury has revealed that there is one, and they seek her desperately. Unfortunately, she’s fallen in with Fionn, who really doesn’t want them to succeed. He has his own reasons and dark designs. The part he hadn’t worked out is that she will affect his plans too. Only one Vineart senses the danger, and he has only one weapon to use against it: a young slave. His name is Jerzy, and his origins are unknown, even to him. Finding Emmaus
(Lodestarre #1)
10/01/09
In this unsettling new fantasy novel, the psychiatric community has confused Empathic personality traits with mental illness with tragic results, leading two Empaths--Francis Nettleton and Katherine Spencer--who live three hundred years apart, on personal journeys to learn the true nature of Empathy. Transcending time and death to right a centuries-old wrong, they inadvertently uncover a multibillion dollar conspiracy in which millions of Americans are being misdiagnosed and drugged for no other reason than the enormous income they generate. Finding Emmaus, book one of The Lodestarre series, is a complex, dark, historic fantasy about human frailties and courage. It is an intricate, meticulously researched, deeply disturbing, suspenseful tale of love and sacrifice, obsession and the abuse of power, and the indisputable human right of free will. It is a story with a cast of characters who will keep you guessing as to what they will do and what choices they will make as they weave in and out of the story and each other's lives.

City of Jade
(Mithgar)
10/06/09
Publishers Weekly - Packed with the lore McKiernan has developed in 24 years of writing about the world of Mithgar, this dense novel is set largely between Silver Wolf, Black Falcon (2000) and the collection Red Slippers (2004). The main plot deals with a voyage of the fabulous Elvenship, the Eroean, in search of wonder and adventure. Before the ship can set sail with a crew of fighting men and dwarfs, there's the obligatory tour through the countryside so that characters can reminisce about events in earlier volumes while picking up additional crew members, like a tiny, fox-riding Pysk and two gratingly cute, pointy-eared buccans. Meanwhile, the necromancer Nunde is lurking offstage, feverishly plotting. Appreciating the nuances depends on understanding earlier events; newcomers will find no footholds here.

10/13/09
Continuing the alternate-Bronze-Age epic begun in Beyond the Gap: The glaciers came and covered the world with ice. Now they are in retreat. North of the city of Nidaros, north of the forest, north of the steppes where the nomadic Bizogots hunt, a gap has opened in the ice-wall. And down through that gap come the men who call themselves "Rulers." Their terrifying cavalry rides wooly mammoths. Their bows can shoot arrows farther than those of the southerners. Their wizards wield power that neither the shamans of the Bizogots nor the wizards of Raumsdalian Empire can match, a magic that can melt the stone beneath a man's feet, call down blasting fire from the sky, or decimate a tribe with plagues that have no cure. Scattered survivors of the Bizogot tribes hide from the Rulers. The Empire is shattered. The feckless Emperor Sigvat II is in hiding. Against the Rulers stands Count Hamnet Thyssen and his small band of friends. Jarl Trasamund of the Three Tusk Bizogots. The adventurer Ulric Skakki. And, most important, Marcovefa, the female shaman of a cannibal tribe that lives atop the Glacier itself. Marcovefa has magic that the Rulers cannot counter. But there are many Rulers, and they have many wizards. Marcovefa is but one. Perhaps Hamnet and his allies can save their lands from the Rulers. But first they must seek out the legendary Golden Shrine – and the Golden Shrine has not been seen by human eyes since the time before the glaciers came.

Yet even a pawn may checkmate a king.

SCIENCE FICTION

It's been a crazy month in September, but with some very nice books due out this coming month I'm hoping to be able to put my feet up for a while and read some of these beauties...

The Temporal Void
by Peter F Hamilton
(Pan) Oct 02

I mention this book whenever I can and I'm sure it's been included in my picks every time a new version is released (this is the UK mmpb). This is an amazing read that blends sci-fi with fantasy and is one of Peter's strongest novels. For great world building and characters you could do a lot worse than picking up both this and the first in the series, The Dreaming Void.

And Another Thing...
by Eoin Colfer
(Penguin UK) Oct 11

What sort of sci-fi geek would I be if I didn't mention the imminent release of the sixth book in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy? There is a lot of hype and expectation on this one (along with the innevitable crticism), but I say wait and read it - what else can you do? It should be a good one though...

Star Wars: Deathtroopers
by Joe Schreiber
(Arrow) Oct 23

Ever since I saw the cover for this one earlier in the year it's been one that I really want to read. Horror in the Star Wars universe? Whatever could it be like? Can't wait to find out.

Winter Song
by Colin Harvey
(Angry Robot Books) Oct 01

I've just finished this (review) and it's a very enjoyable character driven story with a great setting. Worth reading - check out the review for more info.

Gardens of the Sun
by Paul McAuley
(Gollancz) Oct 01

The sequel to The Quiet War, this one has some promise after the appluase that was laid on it's predecessor. I've got both the books on the shelf to read and I'll be getting around to them soon.

Red Claw
by Phillip Palmer
(Orbit) Oct

The cover does it for me - I just want to read this one based on that alone, although the blurb does back it up. Hopefully a good fun read!

The Skinner
by Neal Asher
(Tor) Oct 02

I love Neal Asher's work and Tor UK are re-releasing some of his earlier work in new covers this month. The Skinner is my pick of the lot and it still stands as one of my most favourite books ever. If you see it you really should pick it up!

For SF releases for October check out Mark Chitty's excellent Walker of Worlds sci-fi blog.

  1. OMG, you have listed a plethora of great books! I especially have my eye on the new Mercedes Lackey, King Arthur book...love a good Arthurian story! And Kit Whitfield...she is great! I read her "Benighted", a werewolf novel, a couple of years ago and was blown away. I also won the galley for Soul Catcher from BBAW so I'll be reading that soon!

Thanks for posting this...there are many I will be adding to my "to be acquired" list!

  9. thetruebookaddict you picked some good ones. I have copy of the Lackey and Soul Catcher here for review (I need more time dammit) and I read Benighted a couple years back too. Have always hoped she would do a sequel. Sigh.

    Hey RK happy shopping :)

Mardel me too, we suffer from book envy.

Elnice it is kind of intimidating each month to look at the list and decide what you can afford and what you have time to read.

    Kristen mine too!

  11. Thanks for the mention of the AWAKENING THE BEAST Anthology! Really appreciated. I'm hoping I get to do a novel about the characters in HONOR CALLS, my contribution to the anthology. All the best and thanks again!

  12. Mandi my TBR bookshelves are teetering :)

Hi Caridad thanks for the heads up. I like that HQN is repackaging the individual Nocturne Bites as group anthologies in book form for those of us that don't use ereaders.
