Usually I read an anthology front to back in order, but when I received Zombie Raccoons and Killer Bunnies (thanks Kerrie!) I checked the table of contents and started off with one of my favourite urban fantasy writers - Carrie Vaughn of the Kitty Norville series. Carrie is showing off her science fiction geek cred with her contribution Watching which I was delighted to find was a Feghoot or shaggy dog story, only it was about killer pigeons - sort of.
A man proposes to his girlfriend on a dream vacation to Venice and he receives a Dear John response. Quiting his job, he travels Europe spiralling slowly into depression and despair, eventually living in parks and on the street. Everywhere he goes he finds pigeons, talks to them and at time believes they talk back. Or do they? A change of POV introduces us to a secret government project. You guessed it - involving pigeons. The entire story as is the nature of a Feghoot is a setup for the concluding line. Don't be eating or drinking when you get to the end if you don't want to be wearing it. I hadn't read one of these types of stories in many a moon and laughed my head off. Thank you Carrie.
