Reviewette – Perdition by Caitlin Kittredge

Anthology: The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2
Story: 4 of 25
Pages: 24

Perdition is an alternate or “secret history” tale of fabled gunfighter Doc Holliday and companion Kate Elder (Big Nose Kate). The story begins with Kate entering a saloon and shooting Doc with a rifle in 1888 (the year after his reported death). The story alternates between present and past flashbacks; beginning with Kate’s first meeting with Doc and chronicles their relationship and activities as vampire hunters. Perdition wonderfully captures the flavour and tone of the old west and neatly blends historical detail with untold events right down to a selected line of dialogue which is a real-life quote from Holliday after the fight at the OK Corral - .
“That was awful,” he mutters. ”Just awful.”
Perdition beautifully portrays Kate and Doc’s enduring romance even beyond death as Kate struggles to honour a promise. Strong characterization and evocative period setting make Perdition a standout for me.

Mammoth Rating: 4.5 TUSKS (of 5)

  1. I do like when authors creatively use historical events/characters in imaginative ways. I will have to picture another Doc Holiday, Val Kilmer just ruins the mood for me :) Great Review!

  2. LOL Smokin Hot I grabbed the Kilmer image because the historical shot isn't all that great and hey Kilmer doesn't do it for me either :)
