Reviewette – “Into the Mist For Ever” by Rosemary Laurey

Anthology: The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2
Story: 7 of 25
Pages: 24

Into the Mist For Ever is set during the time of Roman occupied Britain. Justinius, a surgeon is hunting boar with some centurions when their prey is taken down by a beautiful woman they take to be a local chieftains’ wife. Justin later encounters Gwyltha in the local village where she is performing services as a healer and he becomes further entranced by her skills and knowledge, beauty and mystery. Gwyltha is similarly taken by Justin. The villagers know her kind as The Timeless and she is of course a vampire. Gwyltha and Justin’s attraction inevitably leads to a night of passion.

They are separated by their loyalties, his to the Roman troops, and hers in support of her human tribes. Insurrection is brewing leading to eventual conflict and the horrors of battle. Into the Mist For Ever is a passionate and lovely story with a bittersweet ending that hits just the right note.
