Cover Art - Caleb by Sarah McCarty

Now I am vaguely aware that romance novels have been open minded about embracing the paranormal, but I think this may be a first. Caleb by Sarah McCarty is the first book in a paranormal romance series called the Shadow Wranglers. The emphasis is on the Wranglers because Caleb is a shapeshifting vampire cowboy. What do you think - is this a new subgebere - cowboy vampire novels. Are NASCAR vampires and werewolves far behind? Caleb releases in October 2009 from Berkley Heat.

Meet three sexy ranchers—who also happen to be vampires—in the first of a new series by the national bestselling author of Wild Instinct.

Allie always desired mysterious, sexy rancher Caleb Johnson, but he never seemed to notice her. Until the night she’s attacked by a vicious animal, and rescued by a shapeshifting vampire that she almost seems to recognize: the baritone growl, the mesmerizing eyes, the inexplicable animal attraction. That’s because her savior is Caleb, and now he has no choice but to bring Allie into the shadows with him—to protect her from a rival werewolf pack, and to finally reveal his true feelings for the woman he’s been afraid to love.

  2. Doug,

I guess everyone is trying to come up with new ideas in the vampire genre. LOL Seems to me like they wouldn't get much wranglin done in the dark. :)

  3. Cowboy vampires ... cowboy vampires ... I just don't see it. I'm having a really hard time picturing it. Will definitely have to give it a try then.

  4. I have read Sarah McCarty's other books and she does a great job with the cowboys, adding vampires can only make it better!

  5. Considering how unrealistic cowboys are portrayed in most romantic fiction... and I get to be an authority here because I live in the middle of Montana... it can't be any more out there IMO. :P

But I do like that she's trying something different from the traditional. Who knows? Maybe this series will really fill a niche that has been neglected and no one knew was out there. :)

  6. I read a cowboy vampire category romance this year, jumped all over it when I saw vampire+cowboy in fact. That particular book wasn't anything to write home about unfortunately. I dunno about this one. It might be good. McCarty does a decent job with the regular cowboys.

  7. Elizabeth I featured this because it really shows how the genre is branching out. Besides why not a cowboy? Do only city folk get bitten?

    Mardel unh huh.

Michelle be interesting to see what 'rules' the vampires have to live by.

Ceri don't forget the shapeshifter part.

Book Junkie I was hoping someone was familiar with her other writing and would comment. Good to know.

Rhianna like Ceri says above - I'm willing to give it a try.

KMont good to see a second recommendation for McCarty. Like I said earlier, no reason why a vampire can't be from any walk of life - so why not a cowboy. Although herding cattle at night might be a trifle difficult.

  8. The NASCAR vampires are in Raven Hart's Savannah Vampire series.
Well Jack is a big NASCAR fan, but I believe there is another vampire in the books briefly who is a driver.

  9. If he's a real cowboy, how does he get his ropin and ranchin done? It's probably hard to herd cattle and ride horses at night. Prairie dog holes, circadian rhythms, etc.

  10. I really liked this book too. My book; www.eloquentbooks.com/TrueLoveIsNotCommon.html, has similar main character. I grew up reading this author since my high school. Hope that my book will one day reach many readers as this author.

  12. Daelith I can't believe you remember details like that. Awesome.

Jill I guess we will have to read it to find out. BTW congrats on your release today. A really terrific cover.

Patricia you are saying what everyone else is thinking :)

  13. mmm.. not too sure on the shapeshifting vampire cowboy part, but since it is Sarah McCarty I will definitely give it a go. She can normally involve me in any character, no matter how far-fetched.

Though I wasn't too keen on her Berkley shape shifters, I miss the Ellora's Cave ones.
