Reviewette - “Sword Point” by Maria V. Snyder

Anthology: The Eternal Kiss
Story: 3 of 13
Pages: 33
Excerpt: Yes

In Sword Point, Ava is teen with her heart set on making the Olympic fencing team. Invited to the Academy of the Sword where she can learn from the best she embarks on a gruelling daily training regimen. However the Academy is located in a seedy part of town and Ava must travel by bus and walk to the building. Initially she has a run in with Jarrett, the young owner of a martial arts studio adjacent to the Academy. The misunderstanding eventually turns to grudging respect and friendship as Jarrett maintains a watch on Ava outside the Academy to protect her from “bad elements”. As the story unfolds, Ava is attacked by a group of vampires and rescued by Jarrett and her instructors at the Academy. Seeing is believing and Ava is introduced to the hidden supernatural world - further learning that the Academy has a secret program to recruit and train vampire hunters. Ava perceives a new destiny beyond her Olympic hopes. Nicely atmospheric, Sword Point is richly detailed with engaging characterization.

Rating – 3 ½ Eternal Kisses (of 5)
