Review – “Animal Attraction” by Charlene Teglia

Chandra Walker always hoped to find out who her birth parents were; she just didn’t expect the truth to put her in the middle of a shapeshifter war with the power to determine the outcome, complicated by a forbidden love for two mates.
Animal Attraction is a sizzling hot erotic paranormal romance form Charlene Teglia. Last year I reviewed her paranormal Wicked Hot which I characterized as – “… a scorcher so put on your asbestos gloves before reading.” Animal Attraction is even better – sexier and smarter.

Chandra is approaching her 21st birthday, a normal young woman in an ordinary job. Until she learns she is a rare female werewolf from Zach the alpha male of the local pack. The pack had been covertly keeping watch over her until her maturity. At twenty-one her wolf nature will force her first change. Trouble is in a few short days she must embrace her nature and come to terms with her new situation. The natural process of her first shift will cause her to go into heat where she will need to select a mate from among the twelve pack candidates. All of them must have an opportunity to be chosen her mate, although it is expected that the alpha will triumph. Needless to say this provides ample scenarios for erotic encounters and indeed we are not disappointed.

Sounds like a simple formula for lots of sex, but Animal Attraction is so much more than that. We get a well-plotted actioner that has the pack dealing with an aggressive rivalry with a group of were panthers and fending off the attacks and intrigues of a splinter group of werewolves with a history and connection to Chandra. World-building is imaginative and logically defines and explains the ‘animal attraction’. Other supernatural elements are also introduced including a fae lord of the forest; a guardian of the pack with fascinating abilities who has only just manifested with the appearance of Chandra among the pack.

Chandra is a smart, logical, self-reliant and passionate character. Events conspire to place her in jeopardy several times. No too-stupid-to-live moments here. Chandra thinks on her feet and also has no problem depending on others when she needs help. In her words -
“Hey. I’m not the helpless female. I’m the monster in the closet.”
But the most surprising and refreshing aspect of Animal Attraction is the way in which Chandra asks questions and demands answers about her feelings and physical reactions to the many male partners before submitting or participating in the abundant erotic scenes. In this manner, the author almost magically anticipates the readers’ possible objections and potential disbelief that would let Animal Attraction devolve into a sexfest and lays them nicely to rest and at the same time adds some nice layers to the supernatural nature of the weres. One of Chandra’s responses to a group scene -
“I thought I was going to be like some kind of piñata everybody wanted a piece of. But that’s not how it is. “
And indeed that’s not how it was. Animal Attraction is fun, exciting erotic paranormal adventure with plenty of heat and passion. There is even the expected HEA but even that comes with a nice and satisfying twist. There is some interesting foreshadowing in the novel and some hints of story arcs that might be continued in future sequels. Hopefully some are planned. Animal Attraction releases in a week on March 17. If you want some paranormal romance with a little more kick (OK make that a lot), give this one a try. I recommend it.

  1. I wondered what you'd think of the lord of the forest. *g* So glad you liked Animal Attraction! Sadly, the publisher didn't want the sequel (yes, I thought as far as a trilogy) but maybe it'll get a second chance at life elsewhere. You never know.

  2. Hi Charlene, I thought the lord of the forest was a nice touch and added some nice scope to the story and world. It's a bummer that the publisher didn't see the potential because I think the story can work as strongly as an urban fantasy as paranormal romance. I hope another publisher has more vision.

  3. Chandra is living a woman's dream with all those men to choose from.

  4. Ooh, I'm intrigued. Sounds like a good one! I'll be checking out Charlene Teglia's site for the excerpt!

  5. I didn't talk much about the guys in my review but they were some pretty eligible bachelors. She definitely had to pick from the litter.

Renee if you get around to reading it let me know your thoughts.

  6. I haven't read anything by this author before but it does sound like I really should! If she's as neat as I think she is, Chandra may give Kitty a run for her money!

  7. Lady_tink both are cool characters. Of course Animal Attraction is much more romance driven and Kitty is action driven but I could see Chandra becoming an uber heroine.
