I have decided to introduce a new daily feature here at SciFiGuy.ca which I am calling ‘reviewettes’. On a semi-regular basis I plan to select an urban fantasy or paranormal anthology and do a daily mini review of one story from the collection until the anthology has been completely reviewed. I have found that trying to review an entire anthology at a single pass often doesn’t do justice to the individual stories and author contributions.

The first anthology I have selected is the just released
The Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance which has a wonderful selection of top flight paranormal, fantasy and urban fantasy authors. Twenty-four stories. Twenty-four authors. Twenty-four days. I’ll be reviewing the stories in the order that they appear in the book. Here is the
Table of Contents.
- Carrie Vaughn - The Temptation of Robin Green
- Cheyenne McCray - Succubus Seduction
- Kelley Armstrong - Paranormal Romance Blues
- Anna Windsor - John Doe
- Anya Bast - Taking Hold
- Jean Johnson - How to Date a Superhero
- C.T. Adams & Cathy Clamp - Daniel
- Holly Lisle - Light Through Fog
- Mary Jo Putney - The Tuesday Enchantress
- Eve Silver - Trinity Blue
- Ilona Andrews - Grace of Small Magics
- Dina James - Once a Demon
- Maria V. Snyder - Night Vision
- Catherine Mulvaney - Pele’s Tears
- Jeaniene Frost - Pack
- Lori Devoti - When Gargoyles Fly
- Sara Mackenzie - The Lighthouse Keeper and His Wife
- Lynda Hilburn - Blood Song
- Alyssa Day - The Princess and the Peas
- Michelle Rowen - At Second Bite
- Rachel Caine - Blue Crush
- Sherrilyn Kenyon - The Wager
- Meljean Brook - In Sheep’s Clothing
- Allyson James - The Dream Catcher
Editor Trisha Telep tells us in the Introduction that the collection contains
“a magical collection of succubi, selkies, mermaids, werewolves, angels, ghosts, sorceresses, goddesses, gargoyles, fae princes and djinn, to name just a few.” Alittle something for everyone that loves paranormal tales.

Oh fun! I always find with the anthologies I review 2-3 of the stories, and can never do the whole book justice either.
ReplyDeleteReviewettes are a great idea.
Really great idea! I look forward to this mini reviews because I'm interested in reading this anthology (=
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea! Looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Bella Lee I am going to give it a try. I can always find the time to do one short story per day.
ReplyDeleteMishel me too. I think if I thought about reviewing it altogether it would be too intimidating. This way I take my time and enjoy.
Thanks Gwen!
What a great idea. :-) When I get around to this anthology, I think I'll take a similar approach.
ReplyDeleteChristina the approach seems to be working, a lot less pressure by spreading the reviews out. If you decide to review them let me know I'd love to read your impressions.
