Review – “Scions: Insurrection” by Patrice Michelle

Humanity had reason to fear vampires. But they didn't know about werewolves. Yet.

When Detective Kaitlyn McKinney responded to a call about a strange, burned body, she discovers something far more complicated – and dangerous.

Landon Rourke is a werewolf, exiled from his pack and dedicated to keeping a protective watch over Kaitlyn. A prophecy has said that his kind and vampires would one day come to a truce. But that day has yet to come.

Landon has his own past to deal with, too, involving Kaitie herself. A dark truth that has kept them apart for years. When Kaitlyn gets caught up in the battle between vampires and werewolves, their long-simmering attraction ignites. And in that attraction, they find the secret that will bring them together...
Scions: Insurrection is the second book in the Scions series of paranormal romances. This time the focus shifts from the vampires (Sanguinas) to the werewolves (Lupredas). The story takes place several months after the conclusion of the events in Resurrection. In Insurrection the author introduces Kaitlyn, a smart independent woman who has recently made detective rank. She is investigating illegal weapons trade connected to the vampire hunters and organized crime.

Her path crosses with Landon’s, a private investigator (and werewolf) who we first met in Resurrection. He had been shadowing Kaitlyn for years, acting as her unseen protector, in an attempt to make amends for the death of her policeman father many years ago. They join forces on the case. Landon is looking into the disappearance of three werewolves that have left the pack because they are frozen in Musk form – an upright half werewolf half human transformation. Landon is also fighting to end his lone wolf status and return to the pack and even assume alpha status.

As in Resurrection, the differences between their two worlds, causes personal and romantic conflict but intelligently fuels their relationship. Kaitlyn and Landon are characters that are easy to like and empathize with and there are some terrific and powerfully emotional scenes (and erotic ones too).

Insurrection delivers another jam-packed plot as Kaitlyn uncovers the secrets of her father’s death and learns some truths about herself that will effect the future of Landon and the Lupreda. The action barrels along at a cinematic pace; the fate of the Musks is discovered and the plotting of an old enemy to start a Lupreda/Sanguinas war is revealed and temporarily overcome.

Kaitlyn and Landon achieve their HEA with a really nice twist at the end. More pieces of the prophecy puzzle are solved, but there is plenty left for the concluding story Scions: Revelation. Again, I polished this installment off in a single session because the characters were so engaging and the action compelling. Next up I review the final volume which I expect will not disappoint.
