Review – “The Chosen Sin” by Anya Bast

In this sensuous and lust-filled otherworld, the Chosen are vampires fighting for their very existence.

It is Daria’s destiny to become one of them…

Daria Morris is an Allied Bureau of Investigation agent with one obsession: to wreak vengeance on the brutal vampire who nearly destroyed her. Now she’s finally about to get her chance, on one condition. She must become something she detests: a vampire.

Her fate rests upon one man’s lethal bite. His name is Alejandro Martinez, and he can help her infiltrate a highly guarded group of the Chosen. But Alejandro is also a distraction for Daria. Because thirteen years ago, they shared a scorching night of passion neither has forgotten.

Now, while Daria struggles against her newfound bloodlust, the two must slip into the shadows to bring a monster to justice—even as their desire threatens to consume them. But under the cover of night, they’ll discover that it’s the darkness within that may stand in the way of their hunger for retribution…
The Chosen Sin is a briskly paced futuristic urban fantasy with a very generous draught of erotica/romance. Bast’s vampires are called the Chosen and they are the furthest thing from being cold and undead.

Daria and Alejandro have been tasked with infiltrating a Chosen enclave to gather evidence and take down the leader Sante. Daria is human. Alejandro is Chosen. Sante is the prime suspect in the kidnapping of the daughter of an important religious leader and trafficking in blood slaves and drugs. Daria and Sante also have a history. Sante had been a lover that betrayed her and murdered her best friend Julia and was never convicted of the crime. Daria wants revenge so badly she is prepared to become Chosen to achieve it. For her there will be no going back.

Daria’s natural attraction to Alejandro is inflamed once she becomes Chosen. The Chosen have enhanced sexual energy and libidos which they also use to attract prey. Further complicating matters for Daria, she and Alejandro must successfully pass as a mated couple once they enter the enclave. It is a fascinating dance to see the many booty call scenes so smoothly integrated into the thriller action as the couple seek to uncover Sante’s misdeeds.

There is a futuristic element to The Chosen Sin. The action is set in the future on a world in a planetary system in another galaxy. I am somewhat puzzled at the background choice as the story is solidly urban fantasy and never seriously tries to enter into science fiction territory. It would have worked just fine in a contemporary setting.

One reservation with the story is that I would have liked to have seen some flashback scenes with Daria and Julia to more firmly establish their emotional connection and bond. This type of setup would have made Daria’s decision to make her life-changing decision to become Chosen more persuasive.

For those looking for more then just a little romance, The Chosen Sin is definitely supercharged. Alejandro and Daria are a hot match both as spies and lovers and Sante is suitably villainous. This is a standalone story although I wouldn’t be surprised to see a return engagement.
